corporate taxation

why shouldn't we only tax corporation's profits? Why tax their operating costs when you can just take 50% of any profit made? That way shareholders contribute to tax revenue instead of creaming off dividends without any accountability. . . . What? They do contribute already? Ok, but what about the accountability thing?
